ABOUT THE FILM:
When young Marylee is mauled by a vicious dog, local postal worker Otis (Charles Durning) assumes that it must have been Bubba (Larry Drake), a large mentally challenged man who is her friend. Otis raises a lynch mob with three other locals to hunt down Bubba. Bubba’s mother disguises him as scarecrow and hides him in a nearby field, but the mob’s track and gun him down. The lynch mob learns that it was a dog attack, and that Marylee is ok, so they place a pitchfork at the scene to make it appear that he was attacking them. They are found innocent in court. A few days later a mysterious scarecrow is seen standing in one of their fields and he is found dead the next morning. The scarecrow soon visits each member of the lynch mob and exacts revenge.

Dark Night of the Scarecrow is a 1981 horror film directed by Frank De Felitta and stars Larry Drake, Charles Durning, and Lane Smith. The film was originally meant to be an independent feature but was purchased by CBS – turning it into a made for television film. The film was released on Saturday October 24, 1981 - as part of their Halloween line-up – and was very well received by critics and audiences. Dark Night of the Scarecrow is credited to have started the horror subgenre of the killer scarecrow.

Despite being a made for television film, it got a VHS release through Key Video in the mid 80’s, as well as a DVD and Blu-Ray in 2011. The film was screened as part of the Texas Frightmare Weekend in 2010 to much fanfare and was shown on The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs on Shudder on June 31, 2023.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER:
Glenn Paxton is a film composer from Chicago, Illinois that worked mostly in television and composed the music for the very popular ABC Afterschool Specials from 1975-1983.
